https://www.mmtoolparts.com shows you how to replace a kerf plate on a DeWalt miter saw. Kerf is the width of material removed by a saw blade. A kerf plate prevents kickback when cutting, increases dust collection performance and prevents small cut pieces from falling thru the hold. If your kerf plate is broken or damaged - watch this video to see how to replace it.

So what is kerf? Kerf equals width. In this case, the width of material that is removed during the cutting process.
So a kerf plate is… The kerf plate is an insert designed to close the gap around the blade.
A kerf plate reduces blade chipout, preventing pieces from kicking back at you. It also stops smaller pieces from falling thru the hold. And a good kerf plate will drastically improve dust collection.
You should always use an insert that leaves as little gap around the blade as possible.
If your kerf plate is cut up like mine, it’s a good idea to replace it. Or some DeWalt miters have adjustable plates. Keeping your plates fresh and adjusted will maximize the performance of your saw, and your cuts.
